Halloween Safety Rules

Halloween is just around the corner. Make trick-or-treating safe and fun for your child this year by following the safety rules below.

  1. Children 12 years old and under should always be accompanied by an adult while trick or treating.
  2. Teenagers should never go trick or treating alone. They should go with a small group of friends.
  3. Parents should take into consideration the possibility of their child wandering off and getting lost while trick or treating. As a precaution, pin a strip of white cloth inside your child’s costume with their name, address and telephone number printed neatly on the cloth with a black permanent marker.
  4. In the event that your child should get lost, instruct them to go to the nearest well lit house that has a group of trick or treaters at it. They should never go to an unlit house, or to one where there are no other people around.
  5. Allow your child to carry a small flashlight with new batteries in it so that they can see better at night.
  6. Do not allow your child to cross back and forth across the road. Visit houses on one side of the street first, then cross the road at a safe crosswalk and visit the houses on the other side of the street.
  7. If you live in a neighborhood where there are no sidewalks, walk on the side of the road facing towards the traffic.
  8. Do not use short cuts, such as unlit backyards or dark alleyways while trick or treating. Always stay in well-lit areas.
  9. Do not allow your child to approach or attempt to pet any dogs in the neighborhood while trick or treating. Even pets that you know are friendly can become a danger if they feel scared or threatened by your child’s costume.
  10. Children should only go trick or treating to houses that have their porch lights turned on. They should never go to houses where the porch lights are not on.
  11. Instruct your child that they should never enter a stranger’s home or automobile.
  12. Never enter stairways or elevators while trick or treating. If you go to an apartment complex, visit only the ones that have candy booths set up in the downstairs hallway or outside in front of the building.
  13. Teenager who are trick or treating with a group of friends should only go to houses of people that they know well.
  14. As a safety precaution, place strips of reflective tape on your child’s costume so that drivers can see them in the dark.
  15. Buy your child a costume that fits them well. Do not buy one that is too long and could cause your child to trip or fall. The costume should come to just above the tops of their shoes.
  16. Halloween masks can interfere with your child’s vision. As an alternative and for safety’s sake, use Halloween face paint instead.
  17. Allow your child to carry only a small bag while trick or treating. You can take along a larger bag for them to dump their candy into when their bag becomes full.
  18. Allow your child to only carry fake weapons while trick or treating. Never allow your child to carry a real knife, gun, sword, etc.
  19. Teenagers should wear a watch while trick or treating and return home at the time agreed upon by themselves and their parents.
  20. Check your child’s candy thoroughly before allowing them to eat any of it.

Keep your pet safe too, remember Chocolate is bad for dogs and they could run out the door when you have trick or treaters so cats and dogs should be kept somewhere safe.
