Halloween Safety Tips for Adults
Halloween is a fun time for kids, but it can also be a dangerous time for them if you, the parent, don’t take certain precautions. Follow these Halloween safety tips for adults and make your child’s night of trick-or-treating as fun and safe as it can be.
Fright night (also called Halloween) is almost here. Your kids are excited. They get to dress up in scary costumes and collect loads of sugary treats from lots of total strangers.
And that’s the problem that you, as a parent, should be worried about…
Strangers.
Sad but true, Halloween safety typically concerns your child’s dealings with dangerous and deranged strangers. But if you follow these Halloween safety tips for adults, your child will only have to deal with a sore tummy from eating all of that candy!
1. Check for Local Sex Offenders. Almost every state has a website that lists sex offenders. This is a Halloween safety tip that every adult should follow. Simply do a Google search for your state’s sexual offenders website, plug in your zip code, and find out if any registered sex offenders live in or around your neighborhood. Keep your children away from those areas or at least away from that house.
2. Go Trick-or-Treating with your Children. Depending upon the age of your children, they may not like Mom or Dad tagging along on Fright Night. Tough. Your job as a parent is to keep them safe. You can give them space by standing on the curb while they knock on the door, but don’t let your children go trick-or-treating by themselves. (If nothing else, make sure a trusted adult friend goes with them.)
3. Explain Halloween Safety Rules to your Children. These rules should include never entering a stranger’s house or a car, never going any place with a stranger, and never talking to a stranger.
4. Explain the Rules of the Road to your Children. As simple as this sounds, many children do not know how to cross the road properly. Make sure that your children know to look both ways before crossing the street and to only cross at crossroads or corners.
5. Choose your Children’s Costumes Wisely. You should choose your child’s costume with an eye toward Halloween safety. Make sure that the costume is of a lighter-colored material that can be seen more easily at night. Make sure that the material of the costume is flame retardant. Make sure that the eye holes of the mask are big enough to allow proper peripheral vision.
By following these Halloween safety tips for adults, you can help your child to have an exciting and safe night of trick-or-treating.

Great advice. I especially like the rules of the road tip. Something I never thought of, but makes sense when kids are wandering about the streets in the dark!

Thanks, Heather. I never thought about it either until I researched this subject.
