Origins and history of Thanksgiving.
What is the history behind Thanksgiving, there are books and places online that go in to the history of this wide spread American holiday. Did you know that it was not the settlers that first came to America that started this holiday? Actually people for thousands of years were celebrating and giving thanks before it became Thanksgiving as we know it today. We have all heard how the first thanksgiving went and who was there and what they ate that has become a tradition in a lot of home today. The English colonists that were on the Mayflower came and settled here celebrated thanksgiving with the Indians that helped them to survive here. It was actually not called Thanksgiving at all it was call a day of Thanksgiving.
The reason for the celebration was to give thanks for the rains that had come and ended the long drought they had been through. It was not celebrated in the fall at all it was celebrated about 2yrs later than 1621; it was celebrated in the summer of 1623. English celebrated this holiday was celebrated in the same way at the end of the harvest. Did you know that it was not just celebrated for just one day but for three days? This is to give you a taste of some history that this holiday has that we are not taught in school and not even knows.
