History of Valentine’s Day

A short biography commemorating Saint Valentine.

Who

Saint Valentine was a priest helping, along with Saint Marius, martyrs who, under Claudius II, were suffering persecution.

What

Saint Valentine was a Roman preist.

When

Valentine was living in the third century, roughly A.D. 270. He was killed on the fourteenth of February. Valentine’s Day falls on this date for that reason.

Where

Valentine resided in Rome, Italy.

Why

He was beheaded on the verdict of helping young couples secretly marry, though Claudius forbade it. He apparently thought soldiers fought better single. This is supposedly where the love part of Valentine’s Day comes into play.
