Homemade Traditional Christmas Ornaments

by writecorner in Holidays, May 24, 2009

Celebrate Christmas with old-fashioned ornaments and designs which have been cherished for ages. Simple designs and easy craft ideas make recreating one of these traditions a great holiday craft.

Create homemade Christmas ornaments inspired by the traditions of the past. Beloved and classic designs are both easy to make and beautiful to see on your holiday tree.

Gingerbread Cookies

The Gingerbread Man is a popular fixture even on modern trees — recreate the simple original design using a mix or standard gingerbread recipe. A few small icing lines in red, green, and white adds a face and details to a simple cookie; a ribbon tied through the head lets you hang it from the tree.

Popcorn Strings

Plain white popcorn and a needle and thread makes an easy Christmas tree garland based on the popular traditions of Christmas past. Create popcorn “wreaths” or “candy canes” by stringing the popcorn on simple wire frames and trimming with red or green Christmas ribbons.

Paper Chains

Use leftover Christmas paper, old Christmas cards, and construction paper to create old-fashioned paper chains for your tree. A little glue and glitter can jazz up an otherwise simple garland for display.

Net Candy Balls

Traditionally made from pink mosquito netting, any piece of transparent fabric or decorative netting is perfect to fill with candy and tie with a ribbon to hang from the tree. Hand out the candy-filled bags to guests as party favors or gifts.

Old-fashioned Christmas ornaments keep traditions alive and add a touch of the past to any holiday tree. Preserve a little of Christmas past with holiday craft projects inspired by celebrations of old.
