Is Autumn Really Here?

The nights are shorter, and the leaves are on the ground. Autumn has arrived.

                                                         Is   Autumn really here?

Up until last week, we have been basking in temperatures up to 20degrees, more like early summer. Last weekend the hour changed, and this heralded a drop in temperatures. Then came the rain and misty mornings, and I suddenly noticed that almost overnight, the leaves on the trees were a lovely golden hue,. As I look out of my window, there are green, orange, and yellow tints  of the trees and bushes framed against a very blue sky. It all looks incredibly beautiful. Looking at the carpet of leaves beneath my feet, it is obvious why Americans refer to this season as the ” Fall.”

Many artists and photographers have captured the beauty of Autumn in their work, and some people even say that they find it the most beautiful season of the year. For me, I would say that Spring is my favourite, when everything comes to life, and the blossoms are on the trees. Autumn to me means, more rain, leaves laying all over the garden, and wherever you walk near to trees, dark nights, and the inevitability of knowing that the days will get even shorter, the trees will become bare, and then Winter will descend on us with it’s cold and  grey weather.

We do have Christmas and the New Year with all its  promise of better things to come, to look forward to,  closely followed by Spring, but for now, for as long as it lasts, I’m going to savour the Autumn sunshine, and swish my way through the leaves when I walk my dog.  Time has a habit of passing so quickly these days, so I think I am lucky to live in a country where we have all 4 seasons, and I’m able to experience each one in turn.
