Make The Holidays Memorable

Start traditions that will be passed on from generation to generation. Here are some helpful suggestions.

Do you have any Christmas traditions in your family that will live on after you are gone?  If not, you should start making memories for generations to come. Here are some simple hints that can keep the Christmas spirit alive in your family year after year.

Christmas dinner is a good memory. Seeing relatives from afar increases the thrill of the dinner or the dread of the dinner. You need to create memories for your children, other than the traditional family dinner.

If you have children, make it a special treat to decorate some Christmas cookies. You can go complex to simple, from baking your own cookies to buying a kit at the grocery store. Some cookies are pre-cut and only need to bake and be decorated. Even the youngest children can get involved in this activity. Plan a special cookie day for the children and make sure that the entire family is there to do the decorating. Play some Christmas music, either on CD, radio, or television.

Enlist the family in packing some of these cookies to give to  neighbors or relatives. This little practice instills the art of giving.

Wrapping gifts is another family type activity. The gifts that are for friends, etc. can be wrapped. This, again, can be simple or complex. A Christmas bag, stuffed with tissue, is a simple way to accomplish this task.

Have each member of the family write a Christmas wish on a plain piece of paper. They can select the recipient, or the paper sheets can be placed in a hat to be drawn by family members. In this note, a simple wish for Christmas can be written. This is especially nice to do on Christmas Eve, and during the get-to-gether each person can draw a slip of paper. Once again, even the youngest child can be involved in this, as if they cannot write, they can draw a picture and color it.

Pick a name from the Angel Tree and shop as a family to get a gift for the child’s name you choose. This is a way to get the family involved in the giving spirit.

Visit a nursing home and take the children to talk to the elderly. They will enjoy the companionship and so will the children.

Christmas traditions are the basis of the real Christmas spirit of giving.
