New
New is good, but let’s not forget the old.
New, a word we use to describe this year. A new year with new goals and new wishes. New diets, new hairdos, new thoughts. New policies for work, for fun for … oh heck just new. New relationships, new employees, new employment. New restaurants, new recipes, new beer, new booze, new candy to try too. New, new, new…hmmmm this new could go on forever. New is a great thing, as with many great things too much of anything new is just that, too much.
Now I like new just like anyone else, it’s just we really make such a huge deal about NEW. Like new and improved, is it really improved or just redone to look like new. Another great use of new is the phrase “like new”. People there is no thing “like new”, it’s either new or it’s old…..period. Now there’s nothing wrong with old, old is great too. Like that old pair of jeans that fit perfectly and have been broken in just right. So why would I get new jeans if my old ones are still good? Oh that’s right, I’ve been told by television, magazines even the Internet that I need new. And if I can’t wait for new, I can get a new credit card and get it right now, so no need to wait, get new now!
To bring this back to now and about new and put it in perspective let’s start with this new year of 2012. A new year of new politics about changing the old and getting in new politicians. But really this isn’t new ,it’s not even improved, it is just the same old policies and politicians with new phrases and spin wisdom. An old electoral system that over rules the popular vote with the electoral college. What and why do we keep this old system? This would be a great place for the new, I could go on, but I won’t, I’ll just do the same old thing…watch CNN and complain and armchair quarterback about the system.
Now, a new thought would be to see if some of our old stuff is still good. Like our autos, maybe we just need to put some fresh tires on, maybe a paint job and clean the coffee stains off the seats. Get a tune up, hell I’m sure I could get one more year out of my paid for car instead of getting a new one. Not that I don’t want one, I just don’t need one.
Another new thought would be to really get to know my old friends, see them for all the great things that they bring to my life and how I could really be a better friend to them. I really should see how much of my old life is really filled with newness every day. Like the sunrise on the beach I always tell myself to get up and see, the love of my family which I get to enjoy everyday. Cause guess what?I might not get a new day, so why not enjoy the one i have. I could lament about the old times ,but really, by enjoying the new day and filling it with as much as we can, will give you and I even more great old times to remember.
Now new is really good, but remember to bring out some of the old and see the newness in it and enjoy.
Here’s to love, life and liquor and to all new, and old.
