OCEAN CITY Md. (WUSA) -- Shops, restaurants and hotels at Delmarva coastal resorts are hoping a strong Labor Day weekend helps undo the economic damage wrought by Hurricane Irene last week.
Maryland's Comptroller reports statewide tax revenues dropped by more than $2 million thanks to the precautionary evacuation of Ocean City, Maryland August 26th and 27th.
Irene dropped nearly a foot of rain, but in the end did no significant damage to Ocean City.
Now, Ocean City's Mayor is among those now trying to lead the way back for the Labor Day weekend.
"You would never know that a major hurricane passed through here just a few days ago," Meehan said. "We have little if any beach erosion, no damage to the dunes, the businesses are all open and the sun's out."
Some beach-goers are refugees from other areas that were hard hit by the storm.
"We felt almost guilty leaving our destroyed little Long Island to come see the beauty of this place," John Warren of Hicksville, NY said.
"The beach is beautiful and there's no damage I can see at all," Micahel Markiewicz, of Buffalo, NY said.
Bill Gibbs, owner of the Dough Roller restaurants and the Breakers Hotel said the lost revenue from Irene's disruption hurt badly, knocking off his revenue projections for the season by 10 to 12 percent.
