Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

People all over the world have different views on the Christmas Tree. But where did it all start?

Tis the season for putting up the Christmas tree. It is one of the traditions of the season. Some have no problem cutting down a perfectly good tree from the outdoors and placing it in their home only to dispose of it shortly after the holiday, while others ponder where did this tradition come from. Some people cushion the guilt of cutting down a fresh tree by dragging out the artificial tree stashed in the attic. So what is all the hype about the Christmas tree anyways? Let’s look at where it all began.

According to the History Channel , Germany is credited with starting the Christmas Tree in the 16th century. Devout Christians brought the trees into their homes and decorated them to ease the long winter. Apparently Americans thought the practice was pagan and did not take to the tradition. The Bible warns of such vanity and idolatry in Jeremiah 10:1-5 and God warns the people he will soon destroy the idols we make.

The first tree was displayed in America in 1830 by German Settlers in Pennsylvania, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century Americans embraced the Christmas tree. In fact the Christmas tree became fashionable when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were in the Illustrated London News standing around the Christmas tree with their children.

Tree Facts- It takes 6-8 years for a Christmas tree to mature. The tallest tree, a Douglas Fir, is believed to be 122 feet high and 91 years old.
