If you have children and celebrate Christmas and don’t like to forget anyone in your gift-giving, here is a list of people who often do not make the list but who deserve to be thanked.
· The individual teachers who all have contributed to your child’s growth and learning. It is not easy looking after and teaching other people’s children and these individuals deserve special thanks. They often go unnoticed, but are instrumental to your child’s progress.
· The waitress at the café near your office who has your coffee latte ready when you arrive in the morning and makes it just as you like. A waitress also is someone who might or might not receive a tip and is often overlooked.
· Another service provider who is ignored at Christmastime and who works out in the cold on snowy nights, is the gas attendant who fills up the tank with gas and who often stands in a blast of petrol fumes staring at the car speeding off without so much as a thank-you from the driver.
· And who gives the people in the toll booths a present? They are out there sitting in a small booth, saying hi and bye every two minutes as drivers lean out their windows to deposit coins or ask a question.
There are many people whose services we employ and don’t think about at the end of the year. There is the guy at the news stand who keeps the last copy of the newspaper or Times Magazine for you that you never reward with a gift. There is the girl at the corner dry cleaners who keeps your shirts crisp, your suits fresh whom you joke with sometimes, but never thank with a small gift.
And what about the guy who tends to your garden every three weeks, work out in the hot sun pulling weeds and cutting the lawn? Or the char who comes every Tuesday to clean your house? You pay her, yes, but what about making her day by giving her an extra week’s pay? These are the small gestures that tell someone they are valued and make them happy to be employed by you. These acts of kindness should also not only occur at Christmas, but at all times of the year. You will feel good, you will be rewarded. Try giving a beggar on 42 Street a crisp twenty dollar note; see what happens. He will shower you with words of thanks and bless you.
