Putting The Fun Back Into The Holiday

Instead of dreading the holiday season this year, make it fun…

Each year before the Halloween candy has even hit the shelves, the holiday season panic sets in. Americans find themselves worrying about the perfect Halloween costume, visiting the side of the family that glares at each other over the Thanksgiving turkey, and where to buy the proverbial Tickle Me Elmo. With planning in a little fun, make this holiday season the best one yet.

Many folks use the holiday season as a time to reflect upon the direction of their life. “Where was I at this time last year?” or “Did I tell myself ‘never again’ and here I am again?” may be some thoughts. If these type of thoughts are rearing their ugly head(s), perhaps it’s time for a reevaluation. Make a two column list, describing what your dreams are on one side, and how you’re going to achieve them on the other. Even if you don’t act on the “action side” of the list immediately, this helps clarify where you see yourself going.

Last year, nobody blinked an eye when good ‘ol Uncle Ernie disappeared “to the car” for a little while on Thanksgiving. Thinking he was headed out for a nip of gin, imagine the surprise when, upon leaving that evening, there were funny pictures and words shoe polished on the windows of each person’s car. From hand-traced turkeys to “How was your turkey?” and “I Heart Bambi!,” each person enjoyed the gift of laughter – all the way home. The holidays are all about having fun with family. Think of some fun ways you can add joy to your get-togethers. Whether it’s a nonmalicious prank or a midday trip to the movies, plan something fun (or funny).

Considering joining the gym January 1? Do it now! Not only will you blow off some steam, but it’s a great distraction from the everyday. Last year I went to pilates on Christmas Eve morning. I felt great and the sore booty served as a reminder that I don’t need quite so much Whoville Hash this year. Not to mention, there won’t be as many people there using the equipment, as compared to after New Year’s day.

Make a vow now… there will be no critical thoughts this year. Do you have the “perfect cousin,” who can do no wrong? She married the equivalent of the Ken doll by the time she was 24, has 2.5 beautiful children and a law degree, and just finished building a sprawling country home? Remember that everyone has their problems, and try to focus instead on why this person feels the need to compete. Insecure, perhaps? Envious of your free and single life? Everyone has a reason for what they say and do, so don’t take the bait this year!

Little kids love the holidays. Why? It’s exciting, fun, and they get to play. Remember that this is your time to relax and enjoy life, too. Shock everyone with a little fun, instead of another casserole this year. It’ll be a lot more memorable and perhaps, like a child, you’ll start looking forward to the holidays.
