Reindeer and Christmas

The history of reindeer is often associated with Santa Claus riding on it to present gifts to children around the world on the Christmas day. Santa has a team of eight flying reindeer to pull the sleigh of Santa to help him in delivering gifts. The original names of the reindeers are Dasher, Comet, Cupid, Donner/Donder, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Blitzen, and Rudolph. Clement Clark Moore published the names of eight reindeers in one of his poems called ‘A visit from St. Nicholas’. Among these reindeers, Rudolf is the leading reindeer. Reindeers are the ancient domestic animals and the beloved symbol of Xmas.

Reindeer is the only species in which females and males have antlers. The calves and females have the small antlers and the mature males have big branched antlers.  Reindeer lives in a cold climate and they are native to North America and Northern Europe. The diet of reindeer consists of flowering plants, willow leaves, grasses, horsetails, sedges, and lichens.

Reindeer males are referred as buck, reindeer females are referred as doe, and the baby reindeers are called fawn. A group of reindeer is called herd and the sound produced by reindeer is called bellow. Reindeer can run at a speed of 36 to 48 miles per hour and can swim at a speed of six miles per hour. Reindeer are the only domesticated deer and they are domesticated in Alaska and Northern Eurasia today.

A caribou is the real reindeer that roams in wild natural habitat across Arctic and Subarctic. A large population of wild reindeer is seen in Siberia, Alaska, Greenland, Canada, and Norway. Domesticated reindeer are seen in Russia, northern Scandinavia, and Iceland. Reindeer are again categorized in two major divisions: woodland reindeer with three races and tundra reindeer with six races. The reindeer plays a very important economic role for all the people in circumpolar region.
