Allusion Dictionary
Am I my brothers keeper?
Background info: This refers to Abel and Cain, two brothers from the past. God looked upon Abel’s sacrifice with favor, and Cain became jealous and murdered his brother. When god spoke to Cain and said ”Where is your brother?” Cain replied, ”I know not; am I my brothers keeper?” Keeper, is referred to as someone who would tend to animals and take care of them.
In Practice: Nowadays, This would be said referring to something that isn’t your responsibility. Something you shouldn’t have to watch out for.
Tower of Babel
Background info: a tower built by Noah’s descendants (probably in Babylon) who intended it to reach up to heaven; God foiled them by confusing their language so they could no longer understand one another.
In practice: When something is compared to the Tower of Babel, they are saying the situation is very hard or impossible, maybe due to a lack of communication or just the difficulty of it
Cinderella
Background info: Originally a story by the brothers Grimm, a German text, Cinderella is translated from the name Ashenputtel. She was called this because she was always working the cinders in the furnace and always dirty and grimy because they worked her so hard. In the end of the story Cinderella, orAshenputtel, marries the prince and becomes a princess.
In practice: Usually used to describe something, sometimes in sports. Meaning that the team or the object made a tremendous comeback and is winning everything. Someone who is leading a charmed life from rough beginnings
Guy Fawkes
Background info: A man who was born and raised in York, Yorkshire in
1570. During the war of religion that overtook his surroundings, he took part for 10 years for the Spanish-catholic cause. During this time, he became quite familiar with explosives. He tried to blow a building sky high, and people warned the lord of the building. He was suspicious for a long time and had a lingering feeling that something bad was gonna happen. eventually Guy went to blow the gun powder, and was caught in the act. he was then tortured and imprisoned. As his last act ofdefience, he broke his own neck.
