Spending Christmas and New Year’s in Singapore

Christmas in Singapore is a glittering and decorative event! The streets of Singapore’s heart, and the one of the busiest places, Orchard is always dressed up for every occasion (e.g. New Year’s, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya etc…). So of course it goes without saying that during this jolly season of the year, Orchard road is decorated with the theme of Christmas.

With each year’s decorations being different, it is a sight to behold: especially at night, when the decorations are all lighted up! Not only the shopping malls along Orchard road are decorated festively, but every suburban shopping center and mall in Singapore is dressed for the occasion. No matter where you turn, it is all Christmas music, people shopping and pretty Christmas decorations. Each shopping center or shopping mall has its own distinct Christmas theme as well; adding to the festive mood.

This is also one of those times in the year where there are Christmas sales at nearly every shopping hub in the country, making it worth to make a trip to the little island for some good shopping, great food and festive decorations!

For the past couple of years, there has been an exhibition along Orchard road and selected sites by various churches and Christian communities in Singapore. The aim of such a display is to address communal unity and hope, while creating a positive Christmas experience both in Singapore and around the world. There are floats and plays (stage performances) to enjoy, along with a Christmas Village to discover! This year’s theme ‘One Christmas One Hope’ represents a message of peace and harmony. In addition, as the New Year is close to Christmas, there are parties to join to usher in the New Year. For example, this year’s telecast live party “CELEBRATE 2010” would be held at Marina Bay, with acts from the local scene as well as overseas. There is also a beach party held at Sentosa’s Siloso Beach. For the first time, this 1.2 km stretch of beach will be transformed into a dance party arena of five unique zones. Guests will be able to usher in a brand new year at Sentosa on New Year’s Eve from 8pm to 6am with a fantastic line up of DJs, non-stop music, pyrotechnics display and fringe entertainment. So if you are thinking of a different place to celebrate Christmas, and/or the New Year as well, Singapore is definitely one stop you might like to make.
