St. Patrick &Ndash; Patron Saint and The First Bishop of Ireland

Learn about the life of this great saint. Happy belated feast day to all who answer patrick.

He taught the people in the open, baptising them in the name of the Lord. He prayed for the sick, working for and with his people. He commonly used the clover with its three leaves to explain to the people the mystery of the holy Trinity. Little wonder paintings and sculptures portray him holding a clover leaf. Gradually St. Patrick began to be accepted by the people of Ireland as one of their own as he showed then so much love. He was a true missionary.

His successes in Ireland made him so popular and when his exploits reached the ears of the British bishops, they became envious. They claimed he was claiming Ireland for himself but St. Patrick dismissed it as “petty Church politics”. When a top ranking British man had sponsored a raid on an Irish village, St. Patrick had written for his excommunication. This ticked off the British bishops and they eagerly sought a reason to have him removed. The opportunity came when a childhood friend of St. Patrick now a bishop, was forced into informing the conclave that St. Patrick had taken part in a pagan festival as a youth. That happened to be the day he was captured. This revelation set of a series of inquiries, questioning his fitness to be bishop of Ireland.

When the news got to St. Patrick, he was hurt. According to him he was betrayed by a “traitorous friend”, one he had confessed to in confidence. At this time pressures were mounting for the removal of St. Patrick, but the people of Ireland would hear nothing of it. When things were getting to a head, this same friend of his driven by guilt went to Rome to explain things to the Pope. There he succeeded in getting a written letter from the Pope recognising St. Patrick as the sovereign Bishop of Ireland. The Pope described him as one Bishop that made the difference.

St. Patrick lived out the rest of his days in Ireland. On his death, he was buried at Downpatrick.

Today he is revered as the patron saint of the Irish. Interestingly, he is also one of the patron saints of my country Nigeria.
