Straight From the Heart
The cynical gay man’s take on Valentine’s Day.
Cupid’s arrow aims straight for the heart on the 14th day of the 2nd month. Straight at the hearts of heterosexual couples. A Western tradition obviously created by a straight to extort money from his fellow hetero’s and all in the name of love. Yes, the love of money. Money can buy the material but not what matters. However, for Valentine’s Day this is immaterial.
This year not even the credit crunch will take its toll on token appreciation. Red roses won’t be left abandoned in florists. Confectioners won’t be left to melt like unloved chocolate in the heat of the recession. Passion will once again paint the town red on the 14th.
Maybe I should count my blessings being gay, single and alone on Valentine’s Day. At least I don’t have buy into the 24 hour love-can-be-bought mindset. Even same sex couples who brave dining out in predominantly heterosexual restaurants are served disapproving looks dished out with the regularity of a Valentine’s special three course set menu for two.
So why the cynicism? After all it is another day created to commercialise that which has no price. In this instance, love. However, love is for everyone and is for life not just February 14th.
