Sweetest Day: October 17

People in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio have celebrated Sweetest Day for years, and now Sweetest Day has begun gaining popularity in other areas of the United States; making it a real sweet day for those who love to participate.

Sweetest Day is said to have begun in the 1920’s by a small candy store employee named Herbert Birch Kingston. He formed a group of local people that put together gifts for the homeless, orphan children and other people who were less fortunate. Today people celebrate Sweetest Day by giving presents, flowers, candy and other gifts to their children, spouses, lovers, aunts, uncles and just about anyone in fact. As with other holiday’s, Sweetest Day is recognized by its pretty big retail sales in the U.S.,  in which Ohio leads in the top 10 states in sales followed closely by California, Florida, Michigan and Illinois.

Sweetest Day has evolved over the years to be basically another type of Valentine’s Day. It is said that people who celebrate Sweetest Day should show deep love for their family members and friends by offering them gifts of love or good gestures, to show their appreciation for them. Simply put, it is a day where anyone can show appreciation to those who make a difference and are special in their lives.

Some gift suggestions on Sweetest Day include:

Giving candy is traditionally the number one gift for those you appreciate and love very much. Additionally, flowers come in neck and neck with candy, because of the popularity with the ladies. The beautiful scent of fresh cut flowers just makes the gloomy October weather seen to disappear in thin air; the thought of spring evolves and brings joy to those lucky recipients of flowers on Sweetest Day.

Baked goods such as cakes, pies and cookies are also wonderful gifts for Sweetest Day. They fill the air in the home with wonderful aromas of love and everyone will appreciate filling up with wonderfully baked sweetness that brings joy to everyone’s taste buds and stomachs. Baked goods are also great gifts for those we appreciate at work, in our places of worship and the organizations we are involved in.

Breakfast in bed sounds like a great gift; after all, how many times a year do we actually get treated to a great breakfast in bed with our favorite special pan cakes, bacon, muffin, orange juice and coffee. Better yet, because it is on a Saturday, one can secretly book a mini get away for the one’s they love on Sweetest Day. And treat them to a menu of pleasures at a local resort, casino or hotel, so the whole family can get in on it.

Sweetest Day is gift giving from the heart and spending time with the ones we love and letting them know we appreciate them all day long. Mark the calendar this year and make Sweetest Day part of your family tradition in October.
