At 8:00am of April 13, 2009, the South Lawn of the White House will be buzzing with children. These children will be anxiously awaiting the start of the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, a tradition that extends back to 1878. This year there will be two firsts in the history of the annual Egg Roll; this will be the first time that a black President will be welcoming the children onto the lawns of the White House to celebrate this Easter tradition, and it is the first time that tickets for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll will be offered online.
All Day Event
Many of us have heard of this traditional White House event, but few really know what really goes on after the eggs are rolled. The even actually lasts until 5:00pm, and there are live performances by musicians and storytellers, there are family activities and sports, and there are even cooking classes to be had on the grounds. This year the theme of the Egg Roll is “Let’s Go Play”, supporting an initiative to encourage the youth of America to do just that. We all know that we are leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles; President Barack Obama wants to see our children get up and out of the house to play, encouraging more healthful and active lifestyles.
Initial Public Offering
Those planning on trying to score egg roll tickets should be forewarned that there will be stiff competition. Full information about how the ticketing process will work can be viewed at www.whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll as of March 26, 2009. There will be security screening before guests are allowed to enter through the Ellipse. Ordering will be offered at various times during the day, so if you find that the tickets are not available for you when you check the first time, you may be able to order later. Each family must have at least one child under the age of 10, and cannot have more than 2 adults. There is a limit of 6 tickets available per family.
