The Artists and Their Cookies

It is almost time. Christmas will be here soon and the “artists” are becoming impatient. They want to speed time up and mom would like to slow it down. The Christmas traditions are her favorite part of the holidays and she wants to make them last.

Next weekend will be time to decorate cookies.   The cookie cutters will be brought out of the cabinet and little fingers will be reaching to inspect them.   It is almost like they are brand new toys.

Rolling out the dough.    That is usually one of the jobs mom gets.   Along with using the cutters.   The kids will choose which cutter “ooh” and “aahh” as she pulls the shapes off the dough and set them onto the waiting  cookie sheet.

While the cookies bake and cool, mom makes the frosting.   Little eyes grow larger and light up when they see the colors.   Red, blue, green, and yellow.   Filling the frosting bags and choosing the tips is always fun.   Everything is ready and excitement fills the kitchen.

The cookies are ready and the artists are ready to dig in.   They use knives sot spread frosting, the frosting bags with their cool shaped tips to sqeeze the frosting, they will trade the frosting, eat the frosting, and wear the frosting.   In the end it is hard to tell if the cookies are decorated more than the artists.   It is a good chance it is the artists.

When the masterpieces are finished, it is clean up time.   Another chore that usually ends up being mom’s.   The artists, tired from all their creating and eating will retire to the living room so that mom can clean up in peace.    The supplies are washed and put away until next year, when once again the artists are ready to create some more Christmas masterpieces.
