The Best Halloween Ever

How to have a Halloween your child will treasure for years.

Halloween has always been a fun time for children. Dressing up, wandering around in the dark and asking strangers for candy is a heady time that is looked forward to as the days get shorter and the weather cools off.

It can be a fun time for parents as well as a creative bonanza for the family. If you usually buy your costumes from a store, you can make this year special by making a costume with your son or daughter

Ask your child what they would be if they could be anything they wished, then ask if they’d like to be that person when they Trick or Treat. Watch their eyes light up when you ask them if they’d like you to help them become their favorite character!

It’s not difficult to make a costume and usually much less expensive than one bought ready made from a retail store. If your daughter would like to be a fairy, a visit to a fabric store for remnants of netting and velvet or satin will be all you need to turn your child into a fabled mythical creature. If you don’t know how to sew, use safety pins or iron-on seam tape to put the dress and wings together. You can use these alternative methods with any kind of costume creation. Lovely shoes can be made by wrapping material around a pair of her old sneakers and gluing on some sequins or rhinestones.

Boys often want to be pirates, business executives or monsters. These are the easiest costumes to make and also the most fun. Making eye patches, cutting down and old suit that’s been outgrown by an adult or using makeup to transform that innocent, handsome face into a frightening horror is a lot of fun for both of you. Cornstarch and ketchup makes convincing blood and cause most people to do a double-take, much to your child’s delight.

Your child will enjoy the time you spend with them while you work together to make the costume. It’s a few hours of fun that they will remember the rest of their lives. They may very well tell their children it was the best Halloween they ever had!
