The Christmas Tree

A brief history of the Christmas Tree.

Although the Christmas tree is a very poplar decoration for Christmas these days it wasn’t always this way. At one time during the time of the first settlers Christmas trees along with many of the traditions that we have now were considered pagan going ones and those who practiced were penalized for doing so.

It is thought that the first decorated tree was done so by Martin Luther after walking through the wood one night and seeing the trees against the stars in the night sky. He then cut down the tree and dragged it home were he placed tinny wax candles on the tree ant this would stand as a reminder of the Christmas night sky.

It was Queen Victoria of England and her husband Prince Albert of Germany who brought the tradition of the Christmas tree to Europe in 1845. Since Queen Victoria was more popular then the previous royal family this tradition caught on very rapidly not only in Europe but in America as well.

As always there are many different ways of decorating the tree. Some forms of decorations date back to Victorian times such as boas and ribbons. Candles although now replaced with electrical lights of a multitude of colors still remain very popular. Fruits such as apples and berries are still used in some more traditional German homes along with cookies and stung popcorn. Some people also prefer to use hand made decorations instead of store bought trinkets. Shinny and bright trees make things more fun.

There are a multitude of evergreens that can be used. Areas like the Greenland were trees do not grow import live tree for decorating at Christmas. The many varieties of spruces and furs make wonderful trees. Although some people do prefer to go with and artificial tree more these days because they may be easier to put up.

There are great benefits in going with a live tree this year but if you choose this method please consider wither cutting or digging is best for your home. A dug tree will last longer but if you are unable to replant it soon it still could die. Many varieties of trees can become very large and your yard may not be big enough as well. A cut tree only last about 4-10 days if cared for properly. An artificial tree maybe easier for many but there is also some concerns with led levels to be looked at as well.

Weather you use a live tree or and artificial on or if you use lots of light and shinny trinkets I hope that you are very happy with your tree this Christmas. It is not the size or type of tree one uses it is the joy it brings to ones home that really matters. As always from my home to yours may your Holidays be filled with lots of joy and happiness?

Merry Christmas
