The Dreaded Christmas Present Packaging

The oversized impenetrable cardboard box that has all parents tearing there hair out whilst there child has run out of patient and has moved on to the next impenetrable present.

Its Christmas morning the children are all exited Father Christmas has been the floor is covered in wrapping paper the children are jumping around is it excitement no its frustration and why the present they have just ripped all the wrapping paper of and have so looked forward to getting is impenetrable.

Sitting in a corner surrounded by unopened boxes is the frustrated parent using a knife to slice the sellotape on the box health and safety has gone to the wind,  then as he gets the box open and slides  the cardboard inner out the child gets all exited but for what to get disappointed again as they are told just wait a minute i have to take of all the plastic ties then you can play with it.

Once the parent has worked out which tie is holding which part of the toy to the cardboard the long drawn out process of untwisting them all begins and if and only if he is lucky he wont have to go and search in the tool box for the screw driver that can never be found to unscrew the fiddling little screws that may also be holding the toy securely to the cardboard, the length of time this process can take will inevitably depend on the toy if you are lucky and it is a doll and only a doll without any accessories it may only be one tie around the neck waist and each leg and then the child can play while he spends the rest of the morning and possibly afternoon untying all the rest of the presents.

Late in to the morning the presents are finally all opened and released from there overly secured packaging the children have finally calmed down and are playing with the long awaited toys, the process then starts of disposing the overly sized boxes with all the plastic ties and wires that are now scattered all over the room.

Decision time does he upset the partner and spend time ripping up all the boxes so he can fit it all in the rubbish or does he leave the cardboard for the dog to chew and the children to play with and go and help prepare dinner or does he tidy up the room and leave the partner to do the dinner on there own,  as what ever he does he wont be right.

Why is it that manufactures feel the need to make the packaging so hard to open, why do they feel the need to make it so big, why do they feel the need to have so much of it, surely the packaging for some of the toys cost as much as the toy. Are we not trying to become more environmentally friendly and shouldn’t we be teaching our children to be the same maybe the simple Christmas present would be a good area for the manufacture to start saving so much frustration on Christmas morning as well.
