The Fear of the Ides of March
Some dates and days have significance. Are they really true, or is it just mentioned in literature and stories?
Ides of March is the 15th day of this month. In fact every month the 15 day has some significance. It is to be noted that in religion prophets have been known to keep fasts on the 15th 16th and 17th of every month.
What is it that causes fear of this date?
Ceasar the Roman Emperor was murdered unexpectedly by his close friend on this particular day, made immortal by Shakespeare’s play ‘Julius Ceasar’people have registered a haunting horror and awe about the event in history.
Is it then the fear of death? Again it is Shakespeare who says ‘if it be not now, yet it will come, there is evidence even in the fall of a sparrow’. Hamlet too feared death and remained in the shock of his fathers sudden passing away.Yes, it was a murder once again.
March denotes the change in season. It brings life out of hibernation. Whereas Chaucer the poet welcomes March and April showers T.S.Eliot calls this time ‘cruellest’ in the ‘Wasteland’
As I look out of my window I can see small green buds, new and fresh on the branches. In a few more days they will blossom into pure white flowers and break the dusty brown cold monotony.
Winter is in the last days, can spring be far behind? No! I would think of cool freshness and a new life with hope and peace, and pray for calm and quiet and serenity. No fear of bombs and blasts, no killing nor death.
Let there be goodwill and reconciliation in the true spirit. Mankind on Earth has had enough of disasters loss and bloodshed.
Let peace prevail on Earth our only home, please.
May the Lord Bless us All. Amen.
