The Fourth of July

I originally wrote this for submission on the Fourth of July, then my computer with internet access burned out. This is a tribute to the military and their families who were on alert on our country’s freedom weekend. Thank you to all our military branches and their families.

The Fourth of July, what does is mean and to whom?  To adults, we remember our American History, the revolutions fought for our country’s freedom.  To children, it can mean family and friends for barbecues, maybe swimming and definitely fireworks.  As a child and adult, I especially strive to see the fireworks.

However, there is one more group that I would like to acknowledge on this particular day of American history, and that is our military. Our military is on alert this weekend.  My boyfriend and I had been talking about the Korean missile issue that evening. As I listened to various news casts on July 2, I was listening closely since this topic was explicitly broadcasted, and seemed word for word per our conversation.  The potential results of a missile heading for Hawaii sounded like a potential repeat of Pearl Harbor.  With the movie Pearl Harbor, starring Ben Affleck, (directed by Michael Bay) in my mind, and my boyfriend having seen a naval base with several security guards in place while driving to San Diego, I now picture our military on high alert while we are barbecuing and enjoying our day towards the ultimate fireworks shows.

I felt moved to especially say thank you and pay homage to our military and their families.  Our current times and moreso, times like these must be stressful for our military, but also especially for their families.  I do not have anyone in the military and my boyfriend and I are veterans from years ago.  I was not in during any war circumstances, and  he spent time in Okinawa and Korea.  Also upon hearing a radio broadcast earlier this week, he immediately recognized our current military circumstances upon seeing the unusual buildup of manpower at the base’s gate.

I want to say thank you to our military and their families, especially during our American heritage holidays.  I imagine it is not easy to be on alert these days.  In general,  America has not been put on alert or notified to take precautions this weekend; but, our military and their families have been.  So as we barbebue, swim and watch the evening fireworks displays, we owe a debt of gratitude that we cannot repay, to our military and their families for giving us the freedom, and maintaining that freedom, so we can all enjoy our freedom to celebrate this year’s fourth with them and their families.  See everyone for next year’s Fourth of July.
