The Celtic people were the first ones to celebrate something like our modern day Halloween. The Celts were located in The U.K., western Europe and a small little place in what is today’s Turkey and they were abundant in 800 B.C. They celebrated a big holiday around the time we celebrate Halloween. The holiday the Celts celebrated was for the gods afer completing the harvest. The Celts thought that the distance between the dead and living. They also believed dead one would come back in an aniamal, in prticular a black cat.

The people would go door to door to collect food for offering it to the gods. Also, young people went around asking people for wood and kindling for the bg bonfire.  It has been suggested that this practice was what started modern day trick or treat with candy.

The jack o’ lantern comes from an Irish folktale of the 18th century. He had tricked the devil  into climbing an apple tree. He then carved a cross on the tree trunk which made it impossible for the devil to get downn, when Jack died he was so mean he wasn’ allowed in Heaven. The devil hadn’t wanted him either. But the devil did take pity on Jack that he gave him a piece of coal to light his way. He put the coal in the hollow turnip he was eating. Then he was sentenced to forever walk Earth for eternity.
