The Meaning of Easter

Some think the meaning of Easter is lost so here is some of it now. Also a fun activity you can do with children.

The Origins

The origins of Easter can be brought back to the Pagan times, it was a celebration of the coming of new life (the reason for why you can now see lots of little rabbits and lambs everywhere) it was a celebration in early spring and was a tribute to the saxon goddess called Eastre, as soon as the christian missionairies converted the saxons into christians there wasn’t much time, as the celebrations fell near enough at the same time as the resurrection of Jesus they accepted the holiday but changed the meaning to be christian orientated, this is the one where Jesus came back from the dead on a Sunday after being crucified on the Friday, this is where it is said that Jesus died for the sins of mankind. People also think that if Jesus did not come back from the dead there would have been no proof that he was the Son of God and so people would have thought that he was just another preacher.

The Modern Take

The modern view of Easter is a mixed one, it is now a national holiday for a lot of people and it has been widely corrupted by corporations using it to make money from the selling of Easter Eggs, although all this has happened there is still a Christian/Pagan theme to it with the Easter Egg.

Easter Egg

The easter egg is a modern influence which has a symbolic meaning, it means new life. A chick comes from the egg and the chick is new life. There is also other things you can do to decorate your home for easter, get some eggs and hard boil them, after they have cooled down you can paint them anyway you want to, this is particularly good fun whith children about just for the wierd drawings. After easter you don’t have to waste the eggs either, just peel like normal and eat them.
