The Message of Thanksgiving
This article introduces the reader to the native wisdom of the turkey.
With the upcoming holiday season, people are naturally thinking of the incredible food that is the center of all the gala events. Turkey is the center of Thanksgiving gathering. I grew up believing that the pilgrims brought the Turkey and Thanksgiving traditions with them from Europe in 1492, but to my dismay, I discovered it was the Native People that introduced the Europeans to Turkey and the real message of Thanksgiving.
Earth Eagle is another name for Turkey. The name Turkey originates from the Hebrew work tuk ki, peacock . The turkey can fly up to 50mph and its stocky legs allow it to run as well. The Turkey lives in flocks and roosts in trees and is native to the American Continent. The native people used the turkey for food, the feathers for decoration, and the bones for whistles.
The Turkey is revered in the native culture. Turkey Medicine offers the knowledge of shared blessings and gratitude for the wondrous bounty that the Mother Earth has provided for us. It represents time to share these blessings with others and offer thanks to the Creator. Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays of the year. A special time to gather with family and friends and enjoy the moment. Unlike Christmas, no rushing around to purchase things to give, no decorations to contend with, and slightly warmer weather. Not to mention, awesome parades in the comfort of home. This season think about Turkey Medicine as you gather with family and friends and offer gratitude for the Earth Eagle that is the center of your meal.
