The Preparation for a Holiday are Often More Enjoyable Than the Holiday Itself

We do realize that, the looking forward to a holiday is the interesting part, not the holiday itself. Sometimes, the holiday often turns out to be a disaster or mediocre. The preparations for a holiday mostly are enjoyable, because something wonderful is expected. The preparation for a holiday are often more enjoyable than the holiday itself – It is not all like what is expected.

We do realize that, the looking forward to a holiday is the interesting part, not the holiday itself. Sometimes, the holiday often turns out to be a disaster or mediocre. The preparations for a holiday mostly are enjoyable, because something wonderful is expected.

Unpleasant Experience

When I was a little boy, my dad announced that, he was planning to take the family for a weekend by the sea. All of my family members were so excited for we had taken a holiday by the sea before.

My mum, my brothers and sisters planned what to buy for the proposed trip. We went shopping to buy our rubber floats, swimming suits, hats, mats, sun – tan lotion and all the things we deemed necessary. It was enjoyable as we went from shop to sop purchasing the things.

Three days before the proposed holiday, my Mom started preparing the food we would take for the trip. We were going to stay overnight in a rental bungalow and we had to make sure we had enough food. My mum spent a lot of time preparing cakes, biscuits and other delicious food.

The day we were looking forward to have come. It was a morning dawned bright and breezy. We packed immediately all our things into the car, and proceeded to the beach resort, about fifty miles from our home.

A Hectic Day

When we arrived at the bungalow, we feel so disappointed. The sea was nowhere in sight. In fact we were surrounded by a rubber estate. In order to reach the beach, we had to walk about a mile. The beach was nothing to shout about either and it was not suitable for swimming as there were rocks everywhere. Instead, we have to drive down to a suitable beach some distance from the bungalow, just for a swim. Our enthusiasm was somewhat dented by how things turned out. Our highly expectations for a wonderful holiday certainly did not materialize.

After a hectic day of going to and fro from the bungalow to the sea, we all tired when we finally returned to the bungalow. However, we could not get a proper rest as the mosquitoes arrived in hordes to bother us all through the night. We all wishes that we were back home soon as possible.

We endured a sleepless night and early next morning, my mum suggested that, we all decided to go home. We all agreed, and we started packing our things into the car. A lot of food was spoiled because the refrigerator did not work. So, we had to throw them away. When we arrived home, just before noon, we feels so tired that, we all went to sleep without lunch. It was six in the evening before we woke.

Great Expectations

However, that was a very unpleasant experience; the preparation was enjoyable, certainly not the holiday. I do realize that, the looking forward to a holiday is the exciting part not the holiday itself. The real thing comes, almost always; it is not at all like what is expected. Thus, we are always disappointed.

Presently, I do not have great expectations or look forward to holidays. It is better to let them come as they are. In that way, I do not have to bear further disappointments.

You’re right, I do seem to enjoy preparing for the holiday more than the holiday itself. Once the big day finally gets here everything starts to get very hectic.

I enjoyed the read. Our last vacation was full of mishaps. You are right the excitement of the days leading up to the vacation can sometimes be the best part. I enjoy the weeks before Christmas more then Christmas Day too.

I sympathise with you on your disappointing holiday and enjoyed reading about it. I have had some disappointing ones but I have had some brilliant ones too. I think we should not expect too much and then we will not be disappointed. A great read.

You are exactly right. The things I look forward to most always fail my expectations. It’s better to not get your hopes too high.

I agree, the anticipation of an upcoming can be more exciting than the actual holiday. You have beautiful photos here, and I enjoyed reading your piece, as usual.

When things do not happen as expected, disappointment comes as usual. It is therefore better not to be over enthusiastic in any matter. You are right to say “It is better to let them come as they are”.
