The Secret to Making Resolutions Stick

Keep the promises you make to yourself. What do you promise to do for yourself next year?

Every year there are countless resolutions made for January only to be forgotten by February.  What’s the secret to sticking to those new year’s resolutions?  The secret is simple.  Make your resolutions promises.  Make them promises to yourself.  Make them selfishly, and purely for yourselves, and it will be easy to keep them.  The most difficult obstacle is choosing which resolutions to make.  If you are able to make the right resolutions, following them will flow easily as you are working for your own good and not trying to meet the expectations of anyone else.

The key here is to really treat it as a promise to yourself, and no one else.  There isn’t a Resolution Fairy that will be disappointed in you, and it’s not a promise your making to mom or dad or your spouse, or your kids, or friends, or neighbors.  This is a promise to you, and it is for you.  Since it is for you, it should be easier to keep than keeping a promise for someone else.  This isn’t about anyone else’s expectations or desires, only yours.

Too often we focus on the expectations laid on us by others.  We try to dutifully fulfill our obligations to others, but still need to take care of ourselves.  It is too easy to let your own needs be overlooked while you are busy taking care of those around you.  When it’s time to make your resolutions, don’t say the standard things that the world is always telling us we need to be better at.  Instead, take the time to reflect on your own goals, and what you want to be, for you and for no one else.  If the resolutions you choose are things that are self motivated then you will be able to follow through with them.  The only secret, is that there is no resolution for everyone.  You have to listen to yourself.

If you can make resolutions that are purely yours and yours alone, and uninfluenced by other’s desires and expectations, then you will be making resolutions that are rewarding to make, easier to follow through with, and fun to follow, knowing that the changes you are making are your designs.  Making the right resolutions is the secret to sticking to them.  Make selfish resolutions and see how well you keep your promises to yourself!
