The Sliding Scale of New Year’s Resolutions

Finally charting the failure throughout one year of how New Year’s Resolutions crumble.

On December 31st we are confident that we are going to keep our New Year’s Resolution. This is going to be the year.

On January 1st we start the New Year’s Resolution.

On January 2nd half of the people begin to struggle to keep their New Year’s Resolution.

By January 31st half of the people who have began to struggle have broken their New Year’s Resolution.

By March 31st half of the people who have made a New Year’s Resolution have broken it.

By July 1st a quarter of the people who have made a New Year’s Resolution are lucky to have kept them. Half of those people are about to break.

By October 31st the few who have kept their New Year’s Resolutions are in the minority and half will likely manage to ride out the year.

By December 31st, everyone who has broken their New Year’s Resolution will vow that this will be the year and this time they mean business.

Repeat the cycle for all of eternity.
