The Thanksgiving Day Squirrel
Learning lessons from a squirrel. Being thankful each day for what we have.
In my apartment there is a glass double-slider that goes out to a small deck. Beyond that deck is a small field surrounded by trees and shrubs. That little bit of growth supports many types of wildlife such as chipmunks, squirrels and even the occasional duck swimming in the pooled water from recent rainfall.
My favorite little creature is a young black squirrel. Many times through each day he ventures out of the wooded area to gather his daily food. I often see him up close to my window. No fear but somewhat pensive as he runs, stops, looks around and then gathers what he finds and runs back to the safety of his home.
I’ve told you all of that so I could tell you this: Are we not like this little squirrel? I think we are and as I sit today watching this little fella he reminds me of how thankful I should be for each and every breath that I take.
The squirrel has a place to live: So do I.
He has food to eat: So do I.
He has family: So do I.
He has “friends”. So do I.
He’s able to move about. So can I.
He doesn’t know where his next
meal will come from but knows
that God will provide. So do I.
He’s able to communicate. So can I.
He knows that when there’s trouble
others will help him. I have that support group also.
He knows that regardless of the
situation God will take care of him. I have that also.
He knows that he is loved. So do I.
Obviously there is more but I think you get the point. Regardless of how little we feel sometimes in life we can always look at the lives of those around us whether they are animal or human and know that we are blessed. Even the littlest thing should remind us of how blessed we really are in our lives.
Remember that today as you sit down for a good meal with friends and family. You’ll be blessed and in turn be able to bless those around you.
God Bless

True, we all are truly blessed. We should all be thankful for the things we do have and stop worrying about what we don’t have. Great write!
