The True Meaning of Anti–Christmas

by Brian Daniel Stankich in Holidays, December 24, 2008

True Anti – Christmas sentiment allows you to eliminate your heart and put on a fake face while singing “Joy to the World.” Neither should you worry about the unobtainable peace on earth.

Have a very merry Anti – Christmas.  Enjoy the sports on television, the prominence of food, the gorging around the tree.  Don’t forget the staid tradition of ignoring all the problems you have with your extended family around the table, aided by spiked egg nog.  True Anti – Christmas sentiment allows you to eliminate your heart and put on a fake face while singing “Joy to the World.”

Since most of us have forgotten the meaning of Christmas, we can celebrate wholeheartedly the meaning of Anti – Christmas.

Since the hundreds of “only God could predict and only God could make happen” prophecies concerning Jesus were made up by ignorant old men, we can ignore them.

Since the star over Bethlehem was purely an astronomical event, we can allow ourselves to be misguided and deliberately pay no heed to the worship given by the magi.

Yes, let us intentionally close our eyes to the uproar that occurred in the Middle East some 2000 years ago, and remains with us today.

Let’s say that Mary was actually messing around with another guy, rather than being the pure virgin that God chose to inhabit miraculously.

Let’s continue to pretend that the bestselling book in the history of the world is a collection of fables.  Nice stories – but not nice enough to give us any value.  Good stories – but not good enough to change our lives.

Since Jesus the Messiah really wasn’t born {or if he was born he really wasn’t the Son of God}, we can ignore all those commandments he gave us about loving our neighbors as we love ourselves, giving to the poor and needy, promoting joy in the world, and worshiping the one true God.  And even though the king of the day was threatened by the alleged birth of Jesus, and supposedly tried to kill Jesus the new born king, and might have actually slaughtered hundreds of boys during a two year time frame, it doesn’t affect us, because that event is surely more myth than historical fact.

And all those things we want in our lives, truly want, such as peace on earth and goodwill towards humanity, well, I guess we can forget about those too.  Even though peace was promised by the angels announcing the birth of Jesus, and since Jesus wasn’t really born {we all know that the shepherds were hallucinating on mulled wine anyhow}, then we can’t really have peace.  But that’s okay because the true meaning of Anti – Christmas allows us to say “thank God for the peace we do have” and “it sure could be worse” and “I’m glad MY home, MY city, and MY country is peaceful and the fighting is over there somewhere.”  Of course, we don’t even know where over there is – hmmm – funny that over there is not too far from where the king slaughtered children while trying to kill Jesus.  Neither should we consider working for peace in our own hearts, in our own homes, in our own towns, in our own country.

So now that we’ve thrown out the true meaning of Christmas, with the flaky idea that God could actually become a man, in order to better communicate with us and show us his love, we can proceed with lining the pockets of the retailers and lining our stomachs with sugar and spice.

Have a very merry Anti – Christmas.  And as you do, don’t even think about a God who truly loves you and is trying to get your attention so much that he would rock your world by visiting you personally.  You can forget about caring for others, and just make yourself happy.  You can ignore anything related to peace in your hearts and goodwill among the nations.

But if you wake up on December 26 and don’t feel any better about your life, don’t blame it on the True Meaning of Christmas.

    Good article, Brother.
For believers, a usual thing can strengthen faith, but for unbeliever ton of miracles are useless.
    Merry Christmas!

Very well done! Just make sure that after celebrating anti Christmas that you toss out the baby with the cattle fodder. Don’t need Him anymore until next Christmas when He will be a baby again. Less threatening that way.

I wouldnt mind if we moved Christmas to September which is when most people agree Christ was really born. (although some astromomers say the “star” was probably in the spring)…So happy Anti-Christmas everyone

    Hi, Brian, how are you?
I agree that the ‘true’ spirit of Christmas has been lost on the multitudes. They fail to see that we’ve already been given the greatest gift of all time: God’s love, embodied in Jesus, sent to Earth to light the way toward Love and Peace. It’s a birthday we all celebrate on that day, but who’s the one that should be getting the gifts? Jesus should be! Getting gifts of praise and thanksgiving, that is.
So, I hope that you can find it within you to gain the peace of God this Christmas, and emjoy meaningful time well spent with your family and friends. Take care brother and have a happy Christmas.

Brian, It is sad that so many refuse to look up to the God who desires that all know Him. He has given the best gift ever.

Good stuff Brian. Quite poignant and challenging – at a deep, unorthodox level. I didn’t know you had this within you. Keep at it. My question is how do we get beyond the “stuckness” of where we are? I’m just thankful for His grace, and for the things He has done in my life. Very thankful!!!

Great feedback everyone. Here are some responses:

Karen takes the discussion beyond the season, into the dailyhood of our lives. Simply, how long can we ignore God?

Eddie carries on that theme to encourage us to remember Jesus EVERY day of the year while Dianne reminds us that God’s gift to us is as an open invitation.

B Nelson wants us to get the facts straight, always a good thing.

Adam seems to be saying that the attention is on us during Christmas, and instead should be on the Christ. Thanks too for your encouragement, bro! I did have a meaningful day yesterday with both family and friends.

Gary kind of sums up our hearts. What do we do now? How do we get unstuck? Gary actually offers a starting point for us, in gratitude, being grateful for what we have and what He has done in all of our lives.

Thankfulness is a great starting point as it takes a bit of humility on our part. What’s next? How about repentance – Recognizing that we don’t always consider God’s perspective. How about renewed commitment – telling God, and showing others around us through our actions, that we are still committed to him and to the outworking of his principles in this world. How about some good basic stuff like love – loving those around us. Then we keep going back to God and saying Here I Am, what’s next, what else do you have for me, how can I change my own life, how can I make an impact around me, how do you want to use me to change my life, my home, my neighborhood?

I think if we desire to have an impact on the Christmas season and life in general we have to do it with his direction/impulse/help/vision otherwise we won’t get too far. Brian

I pray that God can use us as instruments of His peace and love. In our attempt to say the right things we also need to remember to live the right way.

    God bless & Merry Christmas.

Beautiful true article. God is the author of the book of life, from the beginning to the end. His son Jesus is our Lord and saviour. Man has commercialized Christmas to the point that now most stores use Xmas, which is just taking Christ completely out of the picture. Exactly what Satan wants, and what God foretold in his Holy scriptures thousands of years ago. But man is too smart to believe in such fables. God have mercy on America.

Well written article. You are so correct. Too many people take Christ out of Christmas. We all need to step back and take a good hard look at our lives and the real reason with celebrate Christmas.
