Thoughts on Trick-or-treating

Some musings on the concept of Trick-or-Treating and Halloween.

The whole concept of trick-or-treating doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. On Halloween, people basically send their kids out and encourage them to break rules they enforce the rest of the year.

We tell kids to never talk to strangers, and to especially never take candy from strangers, but then we send them out to get candy from everyone in the neighborhood.

We also tell kids not to trespass, but then we tell them that they will get candy if they go up to the neighbor’s door. Any other time of the year, these same neighbors would probably be pretty annoyed if there were kids constantly walking up to their doors.

Some parents also teach their kids that nothing in life is free and they will have to work hard to get the things they want. But then on October 31st, they encourage their kids to roam the streets begging for candy.

There is also a fair share of parents who would normally be absolutely horrified if their children left the house wearing anything “weird,” and yet they think nothing of sending them out dressed like superheros or princesses on Halloween.

Think about it. Trick-or-treating is just a strange tradition.
