Tis the Season

How the season of giving can turn into the season of “give me”.

The holiday season is here and that means Christmas trees, presents, holiday parties, and shopping.   Unfortunately, while the holidays are supposed to be a time of “giving” and “peace”, it has turned into a time of “greed” and “selfishness”.

On Good Friday, a man was trampled to death by a crowd of holiday shoppers.  Some reports state that he was trying to shield a pregnant woman from getting run over by the mob and that people were in such a hurry to get into the story, they broke the the doors down.   Other shoppers were irritated and angry when asked to leave the store after the incident and still, others did not even want to stop shopping.

What is wrong with people?   And why does decency get lost in greed?   Is a human life worth less than material items?   It should not be but on Friday, it was.   I find it sad and disgusting that the “want” to be first to grab a sale item resulted in such animalistic behavior.   There was no concern for the safety and wellbeing of others.   There was no one waiting patiently or an orderly entrance into the store.  The only thoughts were selfish ones of people out for themselves and the willingness to push, shove, and literally trample anyone who ended up in the way.

So now, here we are.  A man is dead and his family is in mourning.    For them, the holiday season is ruined for a very long time, if not forever.  Will there be remorse on behalf of the crowd?   I am sure that some do feel bad but others probably do not.   Will this change anything for next year?   I am sad to say that it probably will not.   By next year, this tragedy will be a distant memories and people will, once more, be concerned with the big sale and the need to get in first.
