Typical Slovak Christmas

How we celebrate Christmas in our country.

We don’t eat turkey and don’t have santa claus. So how we celebrate christmas? Very simple. We believe in Jesus and God so we shouldn’t eat meat on Christmas Eve. We eat carp with potato salad. We eat cabbage soup called “kapustnica” with mushrooms and plums and many various desserts. Presents bring Jesus. We have some spacial habits too before the dinner we shouldn’t eat anything. The dinner starts with cornets with honey then goes “kapustnica” and after carp. After dinner we wait 30 minutes and then comes very exciting moment because Jesus is coming. The most common habit is that the first go father to check if Jesus is still near christmas tree. When Jesus isn’t there he screams that we can come. The main differnce between Europe and America is that we give presents and eat supper on 24 December. I like Europian traditions more. And one of most common habit is cuting apple too. You cat it in two halves and there should be some shape in the middle. If it is star it means luck and richness else poor year.
