Unique Family Holiday Traditions: Share Togetherness
Celebrate the holidays with unique traditions that will be cherished for years to come. Get the whole family involved in fun and easy activities in each holiday season and make memories you’ll cherish.
Special traditions can make a holiday all the more fun for everyone, no matter what their age. A few favorite traditions listed below can make a family gathering all the more significant with a tradition which will be passed down for years to come.
Easter Prize Egg
A family Easter egg hunt can include a “prize egg” which everyone longs to find. Whether a special hand-painted plastic shell or a carefully camouflaged case, the contents vary according to whatever’s determined to be the best prize by each family. A five-dollar bill, a special candy bar, even a gift card can be tucked inside before the egg is hidden in a difficult hiding place by the elected “officer” (usually determined by drawing straws).
Ghost Story Night
Spend Halloween night sharing spooky tales as a family. Whether a backyard gathering by lantern light or a cozy living room with a fireplace or flashlight, a stack of spooky stories should be provided and read aloud in turns. Let each person include his or her favorite ghost tale or collect a whole-new choice from classic collections or kid-friendly paperback versions.
Thankful Chain
Share your most thankful moments this Thanksgiving by starting a special chain to be displayed and passed down each year. Provide each guest with a few slips of paper and pen to fill out what they’re most thankful for. After reading them aloud, use the strips of paper to form links in a paper chain and hang from a windowsill or doorway. Each year the chain will build with new memories and favorite moments combined.
Ornament Hunt
Have an ornament hunt for a special and unusual ornament hidden on the Christmas tree. The designated officer (by drawing or volunteer) hides the ornament in the most difficult spot they can find on the tree and let the rest hunt for it on Christmas Eve. The first to fine it among the branches or cleverly concealed behind another ornament receives a special piece of Christmas candy or another small prize.
