Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s is hyped up all around the world. Extravagant gifts from humongous teddy bears, flowers, chocolate statues. What’s the big deal?

Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of valentines over the years, and honestly now, its just another day of the year.

Valentines day is based on remembering early Christian Martyrs Valentine. It became associated with love and romantic things. An alternative theory is that originated from Belarus, is that the story of St. Valentine. He got rejected by his mistress and he cut out his heart that was still beating and sent it to her showing his love for her.

Is it a big corporation holiday to get people to buy products? I’m not sure about this one, just thinking about this and its highly unlikely because its been around as a Christian celebration. Although big companies could use this celebration to suck in people to buy valentines day products, who knows.

Lastly to me, I believe this is just another ordinary day of the year that gets more ordinary by the year. Not for all though.

Hi Denus, I appreciate your opinion, but I think for some people Valentine is not just another day. For me, it would be nice if someone I love send me flower or chocolate, even though It will still be find if they didn’t. However, it is so true that love to our loved ones should be shown not only on Valentine’s day but the whole days of the year! Interesting article!

I believe in Valentine’s day that comes every day of the year, and doesn’t require going out and buying stuff to show love. I wrote about this. You made some good points. A lot of holidays become opportunistic moments for business.

    You made some good points.

However,I think, for whatever it is worth, the Valentine’s Day gives excuse and many a reasons to bring romance in life…!!! We could do with more of the Love …

I agree with you here, receiving a gift on Valentines day doesn’t mean as much as randomly receiving a gift just because someone felt like it. To me valentines day is like being told to be romantic. I’ll still be upset if I don’t get a card though!

Valentine’s Day may have become commercialised, as has every traditional holiday or feast day or religious festival, but you are probably right: Valentine’s Day does seem to be more about buying extravaggant gifts than any true sentiment.
If people want to use the day of an excuse to express their feeling (whether by buying something or making something or just doing something that shows they care) then it can’t be all bad can it?

Good piece. I believe also that Valentine’s Day has been hyped up too much. I think that you should always find a way to show those around you how much you love them. I do not need a certain day of the year to be reminded. If I did it would not be Valentine’s day. There are other dates that have a greater meaning to me.

Oh, Denus, we’re going to have to find you a girlfriend…But seriously, everything is a bit commercialized about the day. I agree with AC, it shouldn’t take a “special” day to show the ones you love how much you love them. But a bouquet of red roses would be nice.

Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and other holidays are just excuses we have to celebrate something that’s beyond a date.

I agree with Maria, but celebrating love can’t be bad! St. Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate! You don’t have to spend money and make it commercial because a few well chosen words can be just as precious.

I too agree with Maria! You don’t need an excuse to show someone you love them, but a special day is a wonderful time to go do something different – not because it’s expected but because it’s fun. I wrote an article on this as well. The key is communication, not choice of gifts!

BTW, happy Valentine’s Day! (a little early)

Hi Denus. When I was MUCH younger, used to get loads of Valentines- and never knew who they were from- That was fun. It seems concocted to give a Valentines pressie to your loved one- its nice, tho’ and its an excuse to become gooey eyed for a day/evening/hour.-And its great for those that only trade their wares for Valentines day. They make a buck or too. They sell, we buy, we have a choice. But then again, perhaps the pressure from Partners etc is just to much for many to ignore. Its nice to give. Shame we have to have a day to be reminded. I’m not ripping my heart out for anyone!

I love it when people express personal opinions! :)

I’m on the same page as you, Denus. For the most part, I’m not a fan of Valentine’s day. My fiance and I are always doing nice things for each other or offering small gifts all throughout the year… we just love each other that much!
This year, though, we were thinking of actually going out on a date, just because. :)

It’s too bad that everything that used to have meaning has been commercialized… but I guess that is the way of the modern world.

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode with the greeting card company trying to ‘find’ a new occasion for the summer. The boss says, “Something like ‘Love Day’ – only not so lame!” Anything to boost sales eh? ;)
