Why Australian’s Value Anzac Day
A short descriptive piece about why Australians value the importance of ANZAC Day.
The ANZAC Legend
ANZAC; Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. Many think that’s all there is to it, but being an ANZAC involves a lot, lot more. Being an ANZAC means being brave, being courageous, being a mate. An ANZAC is always up for a laugh, being a bit of a larrikin, but when it matters an ANZAC will always be there for you. An ANZAC personifies Australian values; an ANZAC basically means being a mate. Pte Robert Beatham was symbolic of being an ANZAC. When a mate needed him, he came to help. When times were tough he didn’t complain. He was willing to die for his mate; he was willing to die for his country.
When Australia first entered the world stage, she was a nobody. No one cared about her; she was just another British colony. But the ANZACs showed the world what it meant to be an Aussie; they showed Australia as her own country. The ANZACs were friendly towards everyone, but courageous in battle. They didn’t need to talk about their actions; they just acted to help each other out. They may not have won every battle, but every time they fought, they won a moral victory. Gallipoli is the perfect example. The ANZACs were in an impossible situation, they could not win the Gallipoli campaign, but they carried themselves with pride, and fought valiantly. Even though they lost the battle, Australia and the World honour it as an Australian victory.
Throughout the war, Australia proved herself over and over again. Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux, Amiens; time after time the ANZACs showed everyone the true Aussie spirit. They way the ANZACs carried themselves make you proud to be an Australian. It is what defines Australia, so Lest We Forgetwhat the ANZACs did on the Western Front.
