Women’s Day

A day to honour the women who play vital roles in everyone’s life.

There is just one more day to go, for this world to celebrate its 101st official women’s day. Everywhere I can see people writing and talking about this day and its origin and the great women of this world. I don’t want to repeat the same matters in my own ways. Rather I would like to question, why celebrate women’s day, when there is no men’s day celebration? What are the benefits achieved by this day?

The general concept about women’s day is, a day to honour all women, who play vital roles in everyone’s life. But the history of women’s day is not a bed of roses. It is full of thorns, which torn the flesh and soul of lots of women, who struggled for the uplift of women community. Those were the days where women had to fight for each and everything, from freedom of work to freedom of vote. I feel this women’s day is more about remembering and honouring those golden ladies, who were strong like iron and fought for every women in the society.

When compared to those days, of course it is so precise that women of these days enjoy much freedom and rights in the society. But are we on the right path? Is that the real freedom and rights enjoyed? Is that freedom available to all women in this world? There is a proverb in our land “The old dish in a new pot” which means, the real content is not changed, but just the outlook is modified to give a new appearance.

Whenever I switch on TV, I really get frustrated when I see advertisements, which shows ladies half naked, even for men products like shaving lotions and deodorants. People can argue saying, “Why those ladies are ready to act when the manufacturers are willing to pay their demand?” I don’t want to comment on their choice of job. But my pain is why still men want to see women more with sexual eyes, instead of normal, which forces manufacturers to find such ladies. If there is no demand from men side, why those ladies are going to do such show offs to earn money? There is no honour achieved by celebrating women’s day, when such cheap things are not stopped.

Violence against Women (VAM) crime report still shows high records of violence every year, ranging from eve teasing to rape and murder of women. Child abuse, forced marriage, kidnapping women for prostitution are still happening somewhere in this modern world, which are real shames to human kind. Just celebrating one day to say that everyone is proud of women in their life and wish to honour them by giving a small gift or momentum is no where going to help for the improvement of suffering lives.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) , on the occasion of 2009 International Women’s Day, has warned that due to war situations, specific health-care needs of women are either insufficient or ignored. According to UNICEF, women living in war zones are 300 times more likely to die in pregnancy related issues like childbirth. These chances are very high especially in under developed nations. Apart from pregnancy issues, women at war zones are at the risk of rape and other forms of sexual violence too.

I wish the real honour of celebrating “Women’s Day” will be achieved soon.
