The day of 11 September 2001 will remain a page of history for the American people and for the rest of the world. The memories of this day for Frank Culbertson are different from any other American because he was on the International Space Station.

The 11 September 2001 events caught him in space. In the morning of 11 September Culbertson asked the permission to have a medical examination and found out that something is happening on Earth, where 2 planes crashed in the twin towers of World Trade Center and another in Pentagon. ”My first thought was that my country is wounded and suffers.” He soon realized that the spaceship was going to travel shortly over New York so se took a video camera and went to the window to witness the disaster that took place 400 kilometers under him.
“It was a beautiful weather, with no clouds and I saw the entire North East of the USA. Suddenly I saw a thick cloud of smoke rising from New York and heading to Atlantic. I zoomed and I saw smoke in the south part of the city.” remembers the American of what proved to be the moment when the second tower collapsed.

Culbertson and his colleagues were prepared with cameras when they passed over Washington. ”We flew just over Washington D.C. and he clearly saw the hole left in the Pentagon building, the smoke that was rising and the lights from the rescue cars.” he continued. Two days later he found out that the pilot of the American Airlines Flight 77 was an ex-colleague of him, Charles Burlingame.

“When you are far away in space, the tears flow different. It’s hard to describe how it is to be the only American missing from the planet in those moments. I should’ve been there with you, to help.” said the American that returned shortly.
