9/11 and Its Influence on Me
I analyze my life as it was affected by 9/11.
September 11th, 2001 affected me greatly. 9/11 influenced me to read about modern and world events, and kick started my interest in politics. It changed my world, seeing as I grew up with constant news coverage of 9/11, Operation Iraqi Freedom and political conflict.
The effects of 9/11 were grave. A total of 2,992 people were killed, which means nearly 3,000 families suffered due to a lost family member. 9/11 created a huge political uprising, which will thus greatly affect the 2008 election. In addition, the Iraqi war was started to protect America from a future attack.
9/11 has influenced me to read about timely world events. It caused me to become interested in non-fiction and books based on planes crashes. An excellent example that exemplifies my interest in non-fiction would be a book I read entitled Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden. It is a true, heroic story about the humanitarian mission in Somalia in 1993 when Delta Force and Army Rangers went into the heart of Somalia to capture important warlords. Its purpose was to stop fighting and allow the United Nations to feed the starving people in Somalia. Black Hawk Down exemplifies my interest in non-fiction and modern world events.
In addition to reading about world events, 9/11 caused me to become interested in politics. I began to enjoy learning and reading about politics and government. Though it may seem boring, I find it fun and interesting to watch Glenn Beck’s evening political news program. The show taught me a great deal about politics.
9/11 influenced me literarily, but it has also changed America, which is my world. It split America in two – between people who believe in pulling out of Iraq and who think that Osama Bin Laden won’t think we’re weak and pull out when only moderately threatened, and those who think George Bush is on the right track to protect America and prevent future attacks on American soil and other countries.
Thus, September 11th, 2001 was a very important day in my life, and affected me literarily, emotionally and it changed my interests. I began to look at politics not in a boring way, but as an intriguing learning experience and I began to read more and more. 9/11 has, and will continue to influence me and the way I read, think and act.
