A Biblical Stance on Abortion

Abortion is a touchy subject. Christian and non Christians alike get abortions. But what’s the Bible say about it?

On January 22, 1973, the US Supreme Court, in two separate decisions, Row Vs Wade
and Doe Vs Bolton, declared that Congress and the states had to adopt a policy on abortion. Since then, abortion has been one of the most controversial issues in our country. Why it should even be up for discussion is beyond me. None the less, every time abortion is brought up, the same question comes up. Should people have the right to terminate the life of an unborn baby? In short the answer is no. No person should have the right to murder a child who has not had the chance to live. No matter what the reason is. Abortion is the termination of a life, unborn child, which has been proven, can experience pain through the process of abortion.

The Bible never specifically addresses the issue of abortion. However there are a number
of teachings in the Scripture that make it clear what Gods view is on abortion.

The first would of course be Exodus 20. This commandment says that we are not to commit
murder. The word murder is defined as the unlawful taking of ones life. Now you
may say that abortion is not illegal. Really? As Christians, whose law are we
bound to above all others? It’s Gods Law. And Gods Law says NO!

Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knows us even before He knits us in the womb. Psalm 139:13-16
speaks of Gods active role in our creation and formation in the womb. Exodus 21:22-25 prescribes the same penalty for someone who cause the death of a baby in the womb as the penalty for someone who commits murder. This is what is says. “22If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”

This clearly shows that God considers a baby in the womb just as much a human and full of
life as a full grown adult. And verses twenty-three through twenty-five seem to be saying that you will reap what you sow.
