A Modest Proposal

A satirical essay (based on Jonathan Swift’s famous proposal) on improving the standard of life.

For preventing the degradation of the general

populace to vices both great and small, and for the

betterment of the human race as a whole

It is a sorry sight to see the numbers of people afflicted with impairments, disabilities, and diseases of a degenerating sort. Even sorrier is the opposition to a simple solution which could prevent the suffering of these individuals, of whom there are many millions in North America alone. These poor individuals suffer a low quality of life, constantly plagued with pain, and are unable to perform many simple tasks, and enjoy life’s many pleasures. These can be broadly stated as those who are living with the various cancers, AIDS, as well as those with disabilities of the mental sort. To cure these individuals of their various disabilities, I propose we adopt a practice of the medical sciences titled Eugenics. Eugenics, while not particularly well-known by that name, encompasses the techniques and methods of ending any discomfort felt by the affected individuals.Advocated strongly by the world-renowned Dr. Josef Mengele, eugenics, if properly instituted, will save the medical world sixty-thousand US dollars per year per person who applies. This money may be put forward to help better the quality of life of those living in third-world countries; thus, everyone profits. To begin the eugenics-solution or Solution E as it will be known, all persons suffering from these disabilities must present themselves to clinics, which will be set up, for genetic tests, which will help determine the likelihood of similar disorders existing elsewhere I their family tree. If it is determined that their family contains the genes that have a greater degree of susceptibility to these ailments, then they will also be brought in to the eugenics clinics.Once it has been determined that all those with such ailments have been brought to the attention of the eugenists (those administrating the eugenic solution) then the process can proceed. The process will be administered in three steps, which will apply universally to all those involved. Phase one will involve the mass gathering off all those who are affected by these ailments. Phase two will involve a mass extirpation of these peoples, so they cannot pass on the genetic disorders to healthier individuals within the community. Phase three will then involve using the eugenicized cadavers to create biofuels to help power factories to further improve the quality of life. Afterwards, we can apply the principles of eugenics to all such peoples that we feel degrade from out quality of living. After this cleansing, we can live in a world free from potential genetic diseases, as well as having a much more intelligent and healthier population as a result.
