A World of Fear, Tension and Insecurity

The current state of the Nigerian society is unveiled and discussed briefly.

Man through his mad and senseless ambition to acquire wealth by crude and evil means, has made life very unbearable and unpleasant for others. The said get-rich quick syndrome, has led our present-day youths into many societal evils. God’s good intention in creating man has been continuously abused by man himself.

Today, we are living in a world of fear, tension and insecurity. Things are getting out of hand. Ends can hardly meet. No day passes without one form of atrocity or the other committed. Kidnapping and the newest form ‘adult-napping’ and armed robbery have remained unabated. Nobody is sure of the next day as every passing hour is full of anxiety and uncertainty. Our minds remain often in suspense. It is no longer only the rich or the highly placed that are robbed and kidnapped; it has spread to all strata of the society and human race. Children, old men and women, rich and poor, now stand the risk of sudden kidnapping. In the words of Chinua Achebe, things are no longer at ease. Their areas of operations have broadened even to our sacred places of worship. Revered men of God have lately fallen victims of these day-to-day ugly affairs.

In the midst of these disturbing, alarming situations of armed robbery and kidnapping, other evils of unparalleled nature still exist around us in the homes and in the society at large. Marriages are no longer at ease nowadays. Homes fall apart in disunity. Parents are grossly abused and disobeyed by their God-given children. There is outright disobedience to constituted authorities in the land. The “I do not care” attitude has remained the bane of the society. Nobody talks to avoid being the next victim. You do not know who is who as to know how freely or safely you can discuss issues of the moment. It is really a terrible affair.

Turning to the government of the day, things get worse more often than not. The generality of the Nigerian people are terribly suffering. The Nigerian Nation is really sick and needed urgent attention. Imaging an aeroplane that lost control and the pilot drunk and confused, I feel you should be the one to conclude how possible people survives it.  Employees of the rich oil states of the Nigerian federation walk out or get booted out of office. Events round the riverine areas are not worth writing home about. Where do we go from here? The North cannot accommodate their southern brothers, yet Nigeria claim to be the ‘giant of Africa’. Day-in-day-out, there is one form of religious and political discrimination or the other. Gen. Gowon’s slogan of no victor, no vanquished is yet to be honoured by our Northern brethren. Has Nigerian’s tenth year of Democracy any meaning in the minds of suffering Nigerians? Indeed, to many we have ‘democrazy’ rather than democracy. Our dear hope for a better tomorrow lies in God’s hands. This is our prayer!

What happening to Nigeria is not only a matter of religious tensions, but more on politically motivated chaos instigated by greedy leaders. I’ve been following Nigeria’s journey since my surrogate mother has been living in your country since the early 80’s. it was then that Nigeria was in the peak of its prosperity.
However, no matter what happened to our respective countries, we must remain vigilant and hopeful. We should not let our countries go to the dogs.

As Dr. Martin Luther King found out, prayers would not get the job done. He actually had to get people together to do something about the problem along with the great risk that envolved. Your article contributes to enlightening and that is helping to solve the problem over time.
