“This living being is dependent upon his or her mother for shelter and food, but in all other respects is a totally new, different, unique, and independent being.”1 This quote was presented by a recognized medical doctor in the area of babies and abortion. An unborn baby, according to him and some of the world’s best doctors, is alive from the first stage in formation. Even though the unborn baby is solely dependent on his or her mother, it is still a living being and not a parasite or a blob of tissue. Abortion is the killing of an unborn child, and it should be made illegal unless the mother’s life is at stake.

The question of when the baby’s life begins often arises in the minds of people. The baby, however, is always alive right when it is formed in the uterus.Even if the baby itself is not alive, which it is, the cells that are splitting and multiplying to form the baby are alive. Thus, you can say that the baby itself is alive. Different organs and functions in the baby are formed at distinctive periods. The heart of the baby begins to beat at eighteen days into the pregnancy. By twenty-one days, the enclosed circulatory system is completely formed. Brain waves in the baby have been recorded on the Electroencephalogram ( a machine that measures brain activity) after forty days of the pregnancy. The eyes, ears, and respiratory systems are formed after four weeks. By eight weeks, all the body systems of the baby are fully formed. A couple of weeks before the baby is born, it chooses its own birthday (this means that it chooses when it wants to come out of the uterus) and all of its organs are present and working. Conclusive evidence from some of the most recognized physicians show that indeed, the baby is alive from the first stage of formation!

A mother (regardless of what her parents think) has a choice to end her pregnancy by an abortion. Abortion is the process by which an unborn fetus (baby) is killed. Some common abortion types are:

• Menstrual Extraction: This is a very early suction abortion, often done before the pregnancy test comes back positive.1
• Dilatation and Curettage: This is an abortion in which the doctor inserts a loop-shaped steel knife into the uterus, cuts the placenta and baby into pieces, and puts the pieces into a basin.1
• Saline Amniocentesis: A large needle is inserted into the amniotic sac of the baby, and a concentrated salt solution is injected into the fluid. The baby breathes and swallows the solution, and within an hour, the baby jerks, convulses, and dies.1
• Partial Birth Abortion: Also called “brain suction,” the doctor inserts a pliers-like instrument into the uterus, pulls the baby out, and then inserts a sucking device into the back of the head. He then sucks the brain out. This suction is 29 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner.

Because these babies cannot defend themselves or have a say in abortion, the abortionists and mothers feel they have the right to take an unborn baby’s life. These methods of abortion are disgusting.

There is the question of what will happen if legalized abortion is banned. Many think if abortion is made illegal, then there will be a rise in unauthorized abortions. No one really knows how many illegal abortions there are simply because they go unreported. In 1941, about 13,500 women died from illegal abortions.1 Since then, different medications have been used, bringing the number of deaths down to approximately fifty women per year. Of course, this is only an estimate, because frequently people do not report illegal actions such as this. The only reason, however, that the number of deaths from illegal abortion dropped, was because of the antibiotics that we now have today. So, in reality, no matter what, illegal abortions are definitely unsafe.

A baby in the womb, although unborn, is still a living being. Performing an abortion on that unborn person is taking the life of that human. Abortion should only be allowed if the mother’s life is at stake. The three abortions methods listed above are only part of the many abortion techniques that are performed. These are disgusting methods of ending a human life. God said in Exodus 20:13, “Thou shalt not kill,” which applies to unborn babies. Scientific and medical evidence proves that the baby is alive from the first stage of formation, but even if you do not believe in God and you know that killing is wrong, you are going against your own teachings by supporting abortion! Abortion is the killing of innocent new lives, regardless of whether or not it is born, and it should be made illegal.
