About The National Debt Clock
by The national debt clock, or known as national debt counter, is a billboard sized display that looks like a digital clock. It is continually running and updating the current state of the gross debt of the United States of America and the families in the US that share the debt. It is displayed in New York City, in Sixth Avenue of Manhattan.
The History of the National Debt Clock
The person behind the national debt clock is Seymour Durst. He is a real estate developer who wanted the people of United States to know the rising amount of the national debt. Durst financed the national debt clock’s first installation on 42nd street, close to New York’s Time Square. The time it was first installed, the national debt was three trillion and increasing. But in 2000 to 2002, the clock was turned off with the national debt falling.
In 2004, the original debt clock was dismantled and the new clock was constructed. The new clock was located a block away from the old one. It was believed that the national debt has gone to ten trillion that the national debt clock, the original one, cannot accommodate the number as it didn’t have enough digits.
Seymour Durst passed away in 1995, making the first debt clock to outlast him. His son, Douglas, took over the operations of the clock. He ran and maintained the clock in behalf of organization of the Durst. Now, Jonathan Durst, cousin of Douglas, assumed the presidency and the daily operations of the clock. He announced that the clock will be maintained for a long time.
The national debt clock is the first of its kind. It has a running counter. It has been an inspiration across the United States and for a lot of countries. A lot of projects have been made because of it. The national debt online has also been tracked by a lot of sources.
The government is not the only organization that uses the clock. There are a lot of organizations that make use of the concept of the clock. The national debt clock inspired not only the debt oriented project but also the non-debt oriented projects. These projects are mostly dealing with electronic billboards.
