Accepting People for Who They are

There are as many personalities as there are people in the world. People differ in many aspects. It is fair to say that every one of us has his/her own way of life.

However, there is one thing we have in common. It is the fact that we share the same world. Because of this, it is important to accept people for who they are. Many problems and nuisances can be avoided this way.

Probably every human develops his first feelings towards others upon their appearance. It is a normal thing to do. However, it is also important not to stick with it. We need to get over this first impression. It is very important as first impressions are often influenced by prejudice. This is often caused by the society in which we were brought up. Prejudice is often based on the lack of information or even on false information. This results in throwing people from certain political, religious, racial and other groups into one bag.

How could we live a good life and share our world with other people if we acted upon these first impressions? There is just no way for humanity to exist without such prejudice. There will always be groups of people with negative feelings against other groups. If there were no racial differences, then people would hate each other because of the place they were born or maybe because of the color of their hair. It is the same with the religion. There would always be groups that would practice something differently than others. Because of this diversity and tendencies to categorize people, it is important to accept people for who they are and not for whom they seem to be.

We also need to keep in mind that there is no such a thing as the only right path. Every one of us has his/her own priorities, morals and beliefs. Truth is always relative and depends on interpretation we choose. This makes it even more important to accept people for who they are. We cannot expect to remake them into our image. They will always retain their own ideas and choose their own way of life. If we try to force them into believing some doctrine foreign to them, hostility and even violence are likely to follow. On the other hand, if we accept others for who they are, it is very likely that they will choose the same path and live in peace with us, maybe even become our friends.

To conclude, it is very important to accept people for who they are. Prejudice and hatred can only lead to disaster, whether it is in scope of local neighborhood, a country or the whole world. If we accept the fact that other people have the right to think for themselves, we can avoid many problems in life. It is also important to keep in mind that if people believe in other god/gods then we do, it does not mean they are bad. Once, we accept that fact and start to communicate with people belonging to other religious/political/racial/social groups than we do, in most cases we will find out that these people have morals and values very similar to ours. There will be nothing left to stand between us so that we could become friends with them or at least share this world peacefully and to the benefit of all.
