Active Euthanasia: The French are Largely Favorable

The case of Dr. Bonnemaison, believed to have shortened the lives of at least five elderly people to hospital in Bayonne, has revived the debate on euthanasia. A survey reveals that the French are pronounced at 92% for legalization of active euthanasia.

92% of French people favor of active euthanasia

A Harris Interactive poll, published in the VSD dated August 26, reveals that 92% of French people are in favor of a law allowing active euthanasia for patients with incurable diseases. To avoid abuses, a majority (54%) would like, however, that active euthanasia is restricted to patients with pain that medicine can not relieve.

In contrast, for 38% of respondents, active euthanasia should be possible “in all cases” and therefore accessible even to patients with incurable diseases provided that they make explicit demand.

In the event that a patient is unable to make known its opinion, the French favor active euthanasia is that the decision is made jointly by family members and a panel of doctors (92%), and not by close only (67%) or physicians alone (59%).

And that the French want for themselves? If they were suffering from an incurable disease and causing pain, 83% of respondents would probably not (41%) or probably (42%) the medical manage their “products accelerating death.”

The case of Dr Bonnemaison

This plebiscite by the French of legalizing active euthanasia may be due to relativize the case of Dr. Bonnemaison, an emergency physician at the hospital in Bayonne believed to have shortened the lives of at least five patients older. A broad movement of support on the Internet had followed his indictment on 12 August.

Political side, the Minister for European Affairs Jean Leonetti, author of a 2005 law on end of life, voted in the columns of Nice Matin for the organization, after the next presidential election, a great debate public on euthanasia.
