Adopting The Kyoto Protocol
The Global Warming solution that awaits the involvement of the United States.
The Kyoto protocol was developed to allow foreign countries to trade and invest while fighting the problems stemming from Ozone depleting emissions. This protocol can be beneficial to the world because eliminating the reliance on any one fossil fuel industry will promote industrial growth and technological advances. In other words the door is open for innovation and new products that utilize alternative fuel sources. Kubasek and Silverman states, “As of 2006, 166 countries accounting for 61 percent of global emissions have ratified the protocol, including the EU, Canada, Japan, China, Brazil and India” (453) Environmental Law written by Nancy K. Kubasek and Gary S. Silverman Pearson Prentice Hall NJ 2008. The United States has not yet ratified this treaty it may be time for the United States to reevaluate our role in the world, It is important for all countries to exploit ideas in Environmental and International affairs. There are many important international protocols, but some of the most important like the Kyoto Protocol are the still awaiting a United States signature.
The primary goal of the Kyoto treaty is a future target value for the emissions standards. Kubasek and Silverman State, “The parties to the convention agreed that developed countries would have legally binding commitment to reduce their collective emissions of six greenhouse gases by an average of five percent from 1990 levels by 2008-2012” (454 ) Environmental Law written by Nancy K. Kubasek and Gary S. Silverman Pearson Prentice Hall NJ 2008. This treaty declares the right to eliminate emissions by technological advances that may not be primarily beneficial to the petroleum industry. This helps eliminate the stronghold of the Middle East on the world today. While gas prices soar, we can invite new ideas to eliminate the need for the massive petroleum demand in the world today. This Protocol allows all countries who join the right to establish a better future. Kubasek and Silverman state, “In addition, the protocol contains a component called, “Clean development mechanism.” Kubasek and Silverman continue, This mechanism allows countries in the developed world to use emission reductions from project activities in developing countries to contribute to their compliance with greenhouse gas reduction targets” (453) Environmental Law written by Nancy K. Kubasek and Gary S. Silverman Pearson Prentice Hall NJ 2008. This promotes growth in undeveloped nations through environmentally friendly practices by using technological advances. The protocol itself seems to be one of the most prominent treaties the world has seen. In reality this protocol has been watered down by International members, much like many of the bills that may pass through the American congressional system. So the protocol is far from out right fasicm, and actually adheres to very conservative viewpoints.
